Ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphics depict women wearing waist beads. It is said that the purpose was to serve as a girdle, however, I’m sure this was some man’s interpretation. I choose to believe it was because of tradition. I believe it’s because we as woman do love our bodies and love looking feminine, sexy and we simply love jewels. The wearing of waist beads has not been lost from all traditions. In West Africa, the tradition is still very much alive. The beads are worn as a celebration of womanhood, sexuality, femininity, fertility, healing, spirituality, body shaping, protection and wealth. I personally feel my waist beads give me a since of pride when it comes to my body. I have carried 5 beautiful babies and my body as the marks to prove it. NO, you will never see me in a bikini. You will never see me in a midriff shirt. However, I am still sexy and very proud of my body. My beads are my sexiness! It’s like that feeling you have when you are wearing that sexy lingerie that no one knows you have on except you!

I have started the tradition with my girls. I want them to feel feminine, love their body, and feel confident in how God created them. They know I love my body and feel 100% confident in my own skin. They know there are some garments I will not wear outside of our home but honey you better check before you bring your friends inside! I’m just sayin. Start a new tradition with the females in your life.  Your daughters, sisters, aunts, mother, niece, best friend or coworkers. I have and every one of them simply love their waist beads. Even my coworker Tilly, who is from Ghana.
